Deciding on three operas to make up a starter pack to lend to Kai tomorrow night was fairly easy but deciding which production of each to choose was a little harder, none more so than with Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème (1896) with a libretto by Luigi Illica and Guiseppe Giacosa based on Henri Murger’s 1851 novel/story collection Scènes de la vie de bohème. Finally, Murger milked the material further by writing a novel, Scènes de la vie de bohème (1851), which is the direct, albeit rather loose, source for Puccini’s opera. The novel would have been familiar to Italian readers from the 1872 translation entitled La bohème: Scene della scapigliatura parigina.
